OSSC Secretary's Report June 2008
Irvine Valley College Laser Electro-Optics is now ATEP CACT Photonics
The OISC has co-located with the former Irvine Valley College Laser Electro-Optics Technology Program at the Irvine Center for Applied Competitive Technology (CACT). They are now at a new facility for the South Orange County Community College District's (SOCCCD) Advanced Technology & Education Park (ATEP). Click on new facility to see more. (Click on the Optricks Days logo above for more details about this event.) The OISC in partnership with the Optical Society of Southern California (OSSC) sponsored our 3rd Annual Optricks Days at the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana. This year's event was organized to focus on the educational aspects of optics and lasers as we had numerous optics educational outreach stations throughout the center and special presentations in the 3D Laser Theater.
This year, in addition to the Optricks Suitcase presentation we have had in the past, a NEW presentation was given by the "Optricks Apprentice". The "Optricks Apprentice" is a protégé of Dr. Murty, The Wizard of Light, and provided illuminating fun times for all.
This is Dr. Murty, The Wizard of Light. The Optricks Apprentice made his first appearances at the 3rd Annual Optricks Days.

The Speed of Light Exhibit A new exhibit based on Michelson's Speed of Light experiments at the Irvine Ranch in the 1930's was open from Tuesday Oct. 5 until Friday Oct. 29 at the Irvine City Hall. The OISC wishes to thank Newport Corp. and Advanced Laser Technologies for donating equipment for a modern version of the experiment. The experiment was assembled and tested at Irvine Valley College's Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (IVC CACT). The exhibit also included explanatory posters with text and graphics about the history and science of measuring the speed of light. Additional panels featured information and photographs from the OISC's educational outreach programs and SPIE's Optics and Photonics Theme posters. To view some information about the exhibit, click here. The OISC goes to the OSA Annual Meeting OISC Director Donn Silberman presented two papers during the Forum on Education on Wed. Summer Educational Summary The OISC completed teaching Physics and Astronomy at the UC Irvine's Gifted Student Academy in July. This was five (5) one week session with ~ 20 middle school students in each class. The Physics classes were in the morning and Astronomy in the afternoons. The Physics classes focused on "Motion" and the Astronomy classes built up to a research project. We also had the opportunity to remotely operate a research grade telescope on the mountains in Chile (that's in South America!!) This came to use through a new partnership with Telescopes in Education. We also had some Star Parties brought to us from our Friends of Griffith Observatory - Traveling Telescope program. Also, the OISC completed its program with UC Irvine's Gifted Student Academy (GSA) for the Lower Academy Exploratorium for 1st - 4th grade students. This OISC program was based on the successful Color My World lessons authored by Science Educator Wendy Woolf. The GSA added some new dimensions to the Color My World lessons that we are sure will take these lessons to the next level. You can Click Here to see some photos of the program from the first week and Click Here to see photos from week 2. The OISC participated in the Hands-On Optics Teacher Training and Development July 9 - 11. This is the beginning of a new NSF sponsored program organized by OSA, SPIE, NOAO and MESA California. Click here for more details! Also, click here to see some pictures from Sat. July 10th. See our new K-12 Optics Educational Links Page. It has links to some of the best programs and lesson plans on the web. Please welcome our newest corporate member: Much Thanks goes out to Susan Raffensperger of Northrop and OSSC Past President for securing Northrop as a corporate member.
Thanks to all who helped make this a BIG Success!! Click on the logo above to see photos of the event!! Also, see our new web pages thanking our Exhibitors, Donors and Volunteers. A very special THANKS to OSA for $1000 grant to the OSSC for the OPTRICKS Suitcase materials for this event. Our partners in Optics Educational Outreach Programs. RECENT CONFERENCE RESULTS
Education and Training in Optics and Photonics Tucson, AZ Donn Silberman, OISC Director, presented:
Also, The OISC had table top exhibit Tues & Wed, Oct 7 & 8 from 10 am to 4 pm at:
The results from attending these meetings in Tucson was a greater understanding of the Educational Outreach efforts of the Optics Communities World Wide and how the OISC's efforts play an important role. Being in Southern California, we have an opportunity to make a large impact here that can be used to spread the good words of how optics make positive contributions to our societies world wide.

A new relationship is in the making with a group called IC Stars Astronomy, Inc. from Kansas City, MO. Although they are quite away from Southern California, their story is quite interesting and we believe we will do wonderful work together for our friends in Latin America. The key to this relationship is their subsidiary Southern Skies Star Parties (SSSP) and their non-profit group The Star Garden Foundation. The SSSP takes place in the mountains of Bolivia, South America, where the OISC founder's wife, Ana Maria, hails. A sample of the current OISC effort to help the SSSP can be seen at OISC & SSSP where information was taken t the SPIE Conference OISC Table Top Exhibit (see next story!)
