2003 SPIE Grant Application

 

Past Activities:

Irvine Valley College, Department of Laser Electro-Optics offers cost-effective, convenient, hands-on education in modern photonics.  Our courses have proven valuable for people with wide backgrounds and needs.  Many diverse managers, engineers, technicians, sales personnel and entry level students have benefited from this program.

 

Planned (future) program:

Develop a K-12 Optics Outreach Program addressing three (3) of  the five (5) topic areas detailed in “Optics Education – A Blueprint for the 21st Century” project.  (Sponsored jointly by the Optical Society of America and SPIE-The International Society of Optical Engineering December 2001.) 

 

The three (3) topic areas are:

  • Curriculum development/science literacy
  • Informal education / public awareness
  • Teacher training

 

Create materials to be used with two different size groups,  1-4 classrooms (~30 to 120 students) and school assemblies (up to ~500 students).  The first set of material will be focused on the middle school grades 6-8.

 

The plan will have material for a 45 minute presentation by an optics professional that integrates demonstrations and hands-on experimentation for the students.  Written hand-outs for both teachers and students will be developed for continued learning in subsequent days after the presentation.

 

A web site will also be created that contains information about this program and how various stakeholders may get involved.

 

Suggested amount of grant in equivalent US dollars:  $5000

 

Proposed activity which will be funded by the grant (including the amounts proposed to be spent on each phase/activity):

 
  • Create presentation, demonstration, hands-on experimentation and teacher / student hand-outs.
  • Create an e-mail brochure that describes the presentation.
  • Develop an e-mail list of middle school teachers / administrators to send the brochure
  • Complete a beta site presentation at one local middle school
