Speed of Light Art Competition

Optics Institute of Southern California – Speed of Light  Art Competition Rules

I. ELIGIBILITY

The OISC Speed of Light  Art Competition is open to all persons 18 years of age and older residing in Southern California.  People younger than 18 can work on the art and be recognized, however, the art needs to be submitted by an adult.    The winners will be required to sign an agreement releasing all rights to the artwork in return for an honorarium payment of $100.00. This $100.00 honorarium constitutes a "buyout" of the original artwork, which then becomes the property of the OISC. Winners must provide a valid social security number. The OISC reserves the right at any time to award the prize money to another eligible winner in the event the original Winner does not meet eligibility requirements.

II. ARTWORK SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

There will be 10 winners selected, one each from the following 10 ‘Themed’ categories:

 

1)     Humanity Sees the Light

2)     Stained Glass

3)     Color My World

4)     Kaleidoscope

5)     Medical Laser

6)     Bar Code Scanner

7)     Fiber Optics

8)     Spectrum

9)     Heads Up Display

10) Quantum Entanglement


and they will become part of the Speed of Light Exhibit to be first displayed at the University of California Irvine’s Beall Center for Art + Design in the Summer of 2008 along with physical ‘Hands-On Optics’ displays.  The selected winning pieces will also be displayed in subsequent exhibits, potentially at the Orange County John Wayne Airport Arts Program. Contestants may enter by submitting original artwork to Donn Silberman, OISC, Center for Applied Competitive Technologies, Advanced Technology & Education Park, 15445 Lansdowne Road, Tustin, CA 92782, by Friday, November 16, 2007, 5:00pm. Artwork must be submitted in a rectangular poster format; the dimensions must be smaller than 6 feet square. The OISC will accept artwork in color, black & white, mixed media and digital.  Artwork must be submitted on computer disc and a printout of the artwork submitted along with the disc. Work should not be matted.

How to prepare your entry: All entries must have your full name, address and phone number on the back. The OISC will not accept entries without this information. Please include self-addressed packaging and postage for return of the artwork. If desired, sender may pre-insure work. If you insure your work through the U.S. Postal Service, include pre-paid insurance slip with your artwork submission. All artwork thus submitted with return packaging and postage will be returned within 4-6 weeks after the contest ends. The OISC will also arrange for an artwork pickup period at The OISC during regular business hours. All artwork remaining at the OISC after the 6-week period after the end of the contest may be destroyed.

All winners will be notified by the OISC and confirmed by mail. The OISC is not responsible for any mechanical telephone error, failure or omission, or lost or misdirected mail or faxes, or neglect on the part of the U.S. Postal Service, or e-mail service disruption.

All rules and restrictions are subject to final review by the OISC and may be modified or the contest terminated at any time at our discretion. Complete rules for the OISC contests are available weekdays during regular business hours at the OISC business office, 15445 Lansdowne Road, Tustin, CA 92782. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited. Winners may also be required to sign a release of liability in connection with the contest.

All decisions of the OISC management with regard to the awarding of the prize, the selection of the winners and the interpretation of these rules shall be final. Each contestant, by virtue of entering the contest, agrees to accept the decision of the station as final. The OISC reserves the right to declare no winner if none of the artwork submitted is acceptable.

The last day for artwork submissions for this contest is Friday, November 16, 2007, 5:00pm.

III. JUDGING AND RULES

A.  Finalists will be posted on the OISC website from Saturday, November 24, 2007 through Saturday, December 22, 2007.  Friends of the OISC will get the chance to preview the finalists and vote for their favorite through Saturday, December 22, 2007, at 12 midnight. Although the judges will take into consideration the comments of the FOTOISC, the winners will be selected by Monday, January 7, 2008.  The OISC reserves the right to extend this competition and any changes to the rules will be posted on this webpage.

B. All entrants agree to release the use of their name and city of residence as well as the broadcast transmission of information pertaining to their entry, the visual representation of their entry for contest finalists on OISC.net, or prize-winning conversations, without additional consideration.

IV. AWARDS

The OISC will pay each winning artist a $100.00 honorarium for rights to the artwork for the OISC Speed of Light Exhibit, and the winning artists will be required to sign an agreement releasing the original artwork and all rights to the artwork in return for the honorarium.

The schedules contained herein are subject to change without notice. If it becomes necessary or advisable for the comfort or well-being of participants, or for any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary or arrangements, such alterations may be made by The OISC or its suppliers without penalty or liability.
