Outreach The OISC organizes its own and participates in other educational outreach programs. Here are some examples of past outreach programs: The OISC once again participated in the Family Day Event with our friends at the UC Irvine Beall Center for Art + Technology on Sat. Nov. 3rd. 11 am - 3 pm - The current exhibit is 'Grand Text Auto'. Children of all ages enjoyed the exhibit and our presentation which helped them understand some of the virtual reality and 3D visualization displays.
We were at the Beall Center for Art + Technology for Family Day Sunday Feb. 11th - 11am to 3pm - Lots of fun - Click here for details Hands-On Optics Teacher Training July 29, 2006
The 5th Annual Congressional Conference on Science & Technology Education OISC Director Donn Silberman presented: The Optricks Suitcase Comes to Southern California and also, check out (all downloadable as pdf files) to learn more about this Sat. March 19, 2005 event in Norco, CA, visit:
Hands-On Optics:
The OISC & OSSC have
been participating in the OSA, SPIE, NSF sponsored
Hands-On Optics programs through
the UC Irvine MESA team. OISC Director Donn
Silberman has been working with
schools in the Compton Unified School District.
OSSC Education Chair, Mary Brown and OSSC Historian Tom Godfrey have also
volunteered in this program. You too can get involved by visiting the HOO
website at:

Astounding Inventions: OISC Director Donn Silberman also participated as a judge in the Irvine Unified School District's 18th Annual "Astounding Inventions". Click here to read about this event.
The Speed of Light Exhibit A new exhibit based on Michelson's Speed of Light experiments at the Irvine Ranch in the 1930's was open from Tuesday Oct. 5 until Friday Oct. 29 at the Irvine City Hall. The OISC wishes to thank Newport Corp. and Advanced Laser Technologies for donating equipment for a modern version of the experiment. The experiment was assembled and tested at Irvine Valley College's Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (IVC CACT). The exhibit also included explanatory posters with text and graphics about the history and science of measuring the speed of light. Additional panels featured information and photographs from the OISC's educational outreach programs and SPIE's Optics and Photonics Theme posters. Summer 2004 Educational Summary The OISC completed teaching Physics and Astronomy at the UC Irvine's Gifted Student Academy in July. This was five (5) one week session with ~ 20 middle school students in each class. The Physics classes were in the morning and Astronomy in the afternoons. The Physics classes focused on "Motion" and the Astronomy classes built up to a research project. We also had the opportunity to remotely operate a research grade telescope on the mountains in Chile (that's in South America!!) This came to use through a new partnership with Telescopes in Education. We also had some Star Parties brought to us from our Friends of Griffith Observatory - Traveling Telescope program. Also, the OISC completed its program with UC Irvine's Gifted Student Academy (GSA) for the Lower Academy Exploratorium for 1st - 4th grade students. This OISC program was based on the successful Color My World lessons authored by Science Educator Wendy Woolf. The GSA added some new dimensions to the Color My World lessons that we are sure will take these lessons to the next level. You can Click Here to see some photos of the program from the first week and Click Here to see photos from week 2. The OISC participated in the Hands-On Optics Teacher Training and Development July 9 - 11. This is the beginning of a new NSF sponsored program organized by OSA, SPIE, NOAO and MESA California. Click here for more details! Also, click here to see some pictures from Sat. July 10th.
THINK Together and the OISC have completed their first joint project to reach over 1000 students, staff and volunteers. Click Here to learn more about our successful programs last December and this Spring! And see Fun Photos!!
See Photos from a recent Star Party at RH Dana Elementary School hosted by Ryck Daniels, Irvine Valley College's Astronomy Dept. with assistance from OISC Director Donn Silberman. Thurs. April 29th. See Photos from Planets on Parade at the Cerritos Library, hosted by Mary Brown & Larry Guerra, associated with The Griffith Park Observatory, The Planetary Society of Pasadena and the L.A. Astronomical Society. OISC Director Donn Silberman presented the OPTRICKS Suitcase to the group before the Star Party. Mon. April 26.
