Students will become involved in the processes of scientific inquiry and engineering design. The interdisciplinary nature of modern research and design will be emphasized, and interdisciplinary projects will be encouraged. Work will be completed in an open, non-competitive environment, and although projects will be completed individually, students--like professional scientists and engineers--will be encouraged to share ideas and help one another.

This course will take 7th through 10th graders on a journey through the known universe. Students will ask questions, engage in discussions, and work in hands-on laboratory science projects.

Introductory investigations will include diverse topics such as "How do spacecraft work?", "Is there life on other planets?", and "What is global warming? Can we do anything about it?

Questions like "What are black holes?", "How did the universe begin? Will it ever end?", "Is there anything outside the universe?", and "Can we ever go faster than the speed of light?" will introduce students to the cutting edge of modern scientific research and to the intersection of science with other fields like philosophy and ethics.
